History of Oak Park

The land that is now Oak Park was originally inhabited by the Chumash people and later used for ranching and agriculture. The community was master-planned and developed beginning in the 1960s as part of a suburban expansion into Ventura County. Although unincorporated, Oak Park is governed locally by the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council and services are provided by Ventura County.

The area’s development emphasized open space preservation, low-density housing, and access to parks — values that continue to shape the community today.
